For a year when they were kids, Sam was a girl.

Not literally. Their Dad just made him wear girl clothes and Dean called him his baby sister instead of his baby brother. Sam doesn't remember it since he was only five and he couldn't really tell the difference between overalls and a dress, and Dad and Dean always called him Sammy anyway. He got called Samantha a couple of times, too, but he thought that was just another nickname.

Sammy at five was ridiculously cute. His hair grew into his eyes and his eyes were large and winsome in his face and when he smiled even a little, his dimples were enough to make even Dad grin. So he made a pretty believable girl.

Even though Sammy didn't mind, Dean still felt guilty since it was his fault Sam had to be a girl. He'd slilpped up at his school and said something he wasn't supposed to; and then hadn't lied quick enough, or well enough, and then there was social services knocking on their door and threatening to take him and Sam from Dad. Dad was grim and silent and took Dean and Sam away without even killing what they'd moved to that town to kill; but social services was trying to find them, still, and they had to finally leave the state. Dad was still nervous since he knew they were looking for a single father and two boys; so he changed who they were to a single father and his son and his daughter.

Sammy's hair grew freakishly fast, and it was Dean's job to brush it every morning. Dad said that it was probably for the best to grow it out so that they could braid it or put it in ponytails like real little girls had.

It kind of felt real, after while; because Sammy was soft and smelled sweet and liked to nestle in Dean's arms when they were watching movies, and those were all things girls did and were. And it was nice, having a little sister, because Dean didn't feel weird kissing Sam goodnight on the forehead when Sam was a girl. He liked brushing Sam's hair too, though he had to be extra-careful when he was doing it, or else Sammy would wiggle away; and every braid he ever put in Sam's hair got unravelled in an hour, so he eventually stopped trying.

Sam kept on being a girl for around a year, or at least what felt like a year, until Dad decided that they were probably long forgotten by now. Which was a good thing for them, but which Dean thought would kind of suck for any kids that were stuck with dads they didn't like, who hurt them, like how his teachers had thought his dad hurt him and Sammy.

Dean missed brushing Sam's hair, but when Dad decided Sam could be a boy again, he cut Sam's hair off. Sam cried then, like it hurt him. Dean picked up all the brown curls off the floor and put it in a plastic bag and tried to keep it, but then Dad said that he couldn't do that because there were all kinds of things someone could do with Sam's hair and they had to burn it to make sure that nothing like that happened.

It was weird, having a baby brother instead of a baby sister. But Dean got used to it, and Sam never knew the difference.
